Research Interests

Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Wearables, Internet of Things, Pervasive Computing, and Human-Computer Interaction.


Ali Etemad is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Queen’s University (in Kingston, Canada), and director of the Ambient Intelligence and Interaction (Amii) lab. He is also a member of the Biomedical and Intelligent Systems research group at the department of ECE.

Ali received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, Carleton University (Canada), in 2014. Subsequently, he has held several academic roles including a Postdoctoral position and an Adjunct Professor position both at Carleton’s School of Information Technology. He has also held several lead industrial positions, most notably as the Director of Data Science and Intelligent Systems at Myant Inc., a Canadian wearable technology and IoT company.

Ali has published over 35 peer-reviewed articles and holds 7 issued or pending patents. He is a reviewer for multiple journals, sits on program committees for a number of different conferences, and sits on the Standards Council of Canada (SCC)’s committee for Wearable Electronic Devices and Technologies. He has been the recipient of a number of different awards, grants, and scholarships.
